THE ISLANDS
Oslo is not only buildings and big forests, Oslo is also charming little islands with the possibility to go swimming or relax at a seaside restaurants with a beer or maybe shrimps and white wine. During the summertime you can easily reach the islands with one of the ferries.
HOVEDØYA
The island is covered with forrest and is 0,4 km2 big, located right outside of Oslo. The island is a popular destination with protected vegetation. Meaning that picking flowers etc is not allowed. There is also a nice beach located here.
The island is perhaps most known for its monestary ruins dating back to 12th century.
BLEIKØYA
The island got a lighthouse in the north western corner and some summerhouses for the locals. There used to be a hospital here back in the 19th century for children with tuberculoses.
GRESSHOLMEN, HEGGHOLMEN AND RAMBERGØYA
This used to be 3 different islands but are today landconnected to each other.
There is a big nature reserve here both at land and sea. The place is a haven for migratory birds, using the island for a resting place when migrating.
If you like to go swimming they have a nice beach and also a restaurant to quench your thirst or hunger.
LANGØYENE
Dating back to the 10th century there used to be a quarry on the islands. Then later they produced cement here. In the end of the 17th century the cement production closed down and tourists started to show up instead. Although that may have decreased when the Oslo Government decided to use the islands as a city dump in 1904. The city dump closed down in 1949 and now tourista takenover again.
The beach is nice and popular. On this island camping is also allowed for a period of two days.
