OSLO SEASIDE
The harborside of Oslo has gone through major changes the later years, transforming the area from a busy container yard and industrial area to a place of recreation and shopping. Although lots of work remains, the area now is considered some of the best parts of the city.
THE OPERAHOUSE
The new opera house just recently opened April 12 2008 and it is said that this opera house will be as famous as the one in Sydney, Australia. The design is unique, but if it will meassure up to Sydney remails to be seen.
The marble roof is open for the public and resembles an iceberg raising up from the fjord below.
AKERSHUS FORTRESS
Along the harbor is also Akershus Fortress. It dates back from the year 1299 and from the surrounding park one can get a nice view of the harbor area, looking down towards City Hall and Aker Brygge.
Inside the fortress there are two museums. The National Defence Musem is open from 1100 to 1600 every day of the week and the entrance is free of charge. The Partisan Museum. Is open 1000 to 1600 on weekdays and 1100 to 1600 on weekends. The entrancefee is 30kr for adults and 15 for children.
The Akershus Castle and the Castle Church is also located within the fortress. There are tours available during the summer months. The tours start at 1100, 1300, 1400 and 1500 from Monday to Saturday and 1300 and 1500 on Sundays. The fee is 65 for adults and 15 for children below 18. Children below the age of 6 are free of charge.
CITY HALL
In this landmark of Oslo the Nobel Peace Price is handed out every year. The building is buildt between 1931 and 1950.
City Hall has not much more to offer a visitor from abroad. There is a park, a fountain and some benches to stretch your legs, but not much more.
AKER BRYGGE
During the 80’ties they started the process of turning this former industrial property into a shopping mall and high end appartement building. The work finished by the end of the 90’ties.
The area is 260 000 sqm is scattered with restaurants and pubs making it a favorite destination on those hot summerdays, where people enjoy a cold beer on one of the many outdoor restaurants and when the evening comes in the people visits the many restaurants and bars located here.
Ther is also a small boat harbor, and you can find the ferry terminal to Nesoddtangen located here.
