This street get absolutely over crowdet during the May 17th Childrens Parade. The celebration of Norways constiturion day is world famous however and some people travel from far away places just to experience this celebration.

THE ROYAL CASTLE.

In the end of the street is The Royal Castle. It was first finished in the year 1849 while Norway was in union with Sweden. The royal family of Norway first moved into the castle in 1905.

The royal family stays outside on the balcony for hours during May 17th Childrens Parade. The other days of the year the royal family may not be quite so visible, although one can detect whether the king is in the castle or not by looking for the royal flag, which is allways up when the king is in the castle and taken down when he leaves.

Tours of parts of the castle are available during summertime from June 21 to August 17. The opening hours are from 1100 to 1700 Monday to Thursday and 1300 to 1700 Friday to Sunday and during royal birthdays. The entrance fee is 95kr for adults, and 85 for children. Children under 3 years of age are free of charge.

It could be wise to book tickets in advance, although they do sell tickets that are claimed at the entrance.

STREETVENDORS AND BUSKERS

The street is restricted for pedestrians only from the Oslo Central Railroad Station up to the parlament. The street is full of buskers and entertainers as well as balloon salesmen, souvernir sellers etc. There are several stores and two bigger malls in the area to take care of your bigger shopping needs.

THE PARLAMENT AND SPIKERSUPPA PARK

The parlament with the lions outside, called ”Lion Hill”, is located along this street. It was buildt between 1861 and 1866. There are guided tours availbale. They are free of charge, but they dont go every day,. Between the National Theater and the Parlament is a small park called Spikersuppa where you can rest your legs on a bench or sit down at one of the outdoor restaurants.

OSLO UNIVERSITY

Across the street from the park is The Oslo University. This university was founded in 1811 althought the buildings in Karl Johans Stree t only dates back to 1852. Up to 1946 this was the only university in Norway.
